Famous & Important people
One of most famous poeple was in the twentieth century was; Sir Edmund Hillary. Hillary stood on 29 may 1953, on top of the Mount Everest. Later Hillary returned to Nepal for working with people, to help, he helped to build schools and hospitals there.
Bill Hamilton was also famous. He loved boats, but what he really wants was a boat that could travel fast on the rivers of the South Island. In 1960 travelled four of these boats 160 km up the Colorado River in the USA, and soon people were buying these ‘jetboats’ all over the world.
New Zealand has also sport stars too. Two of the students of Arthur Lydiard where; Peter Snell and Murray Halberg, there are runners. They won golden medals on the Olympics.
Bruce Mclaren had a international success as a racing car driver in the 1960s. Mclaren drivers have continued to win prize s since then.
Everybody knows Jonah Lomu in New Zealand. Lomu played 73 times for the All Blacks between 1994 and 2002, many New Zealanders think that he was the first international rugby star. Also a famous rugby player is Dan Carter.
